Workshop Schedule on Critical Thinking

April 14–15, 2026, Lodz, TUL Building A33, II floor, room 249
Instructor: dr Adam Trybus

Each module lasts 90 minutes and consists of: 30 minutes of introduction and 60 minutes of practical work.
DAY 1 – April 14

1.    Critical thinking, reasoning, argumentation, logic – introduction 
Duration: 90 min | 9:00-10:30
Scope: core concepts, history, role in scientific work.

2.    Argument analysis
Duration: 90 min | 10:30-12:00 
Scope: identifying premises and conclusions, reconstructing arguments

BREAK 30 MIN | 12:00-12:30 
Coffee/tea/cake break

3.    Argument diagrams 
Duration: 90 min | 12:30-14:00
Scope: visualizing argument structure, logical relations, tools for analysis.

4.    Argument diagrams
Duration: 90 min | 14:00-15:30
Scope: criteria for evaluating arguments, strength and validity

5.    Deduction – classical and non-classical logic
Duration: 90 min | 15:35-17:05
Scope: ipropositional logic, predicate logic and non-classical logic and their role in argument formalization

5-MINUTE BREAK | 17:00-17:05

6.    Pragmatics and the social context of reasoning
Duration: 90 min | 17:05-18:35
Scope: influence of context, language,
and social interaction on reasoning and argumentation.

DAY 2 – April 15

1.    Reasoning in science – induction and causal reasoning
Duration: 90 min | 9:00-10:30
Scope: generalization, causal relations, reasoning in empirical research.

2.    Reasoning in science – abduction and analogy
Duration: 90 min | 10:30-12:00
Scope: hypothesis generation, modeling, explanatory reasoning.

BREAK 30 MIN | 12:00-12:30 
Coffee/tea/cake break

3.    Fallacies, cognitive biases
Duration: 90 min | 12:30-14:00
Scope: identifying fallacies, impact of biases on research.

4.    How to critically read and write scientific papers
Duration: 90 min | 14:00-15:30
Scope: paper structure, style, clarity, critical evaluation.

5-MINUTE BREAK | 15:30-15:35

5.    Critical thinking in the age of AI
Duration: 90 min | 15:35-17:05
Scope: role of AI in research, evaluation of tools, limitations and risks.

of the Head of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Lodz University of Technology

regarding the organization of workshops on critical thinking – 1st edition, implemented from the project entitled: "IMPROVE - International Mission to Promote Research and Optimal Values in Education" as part of the STER NAWA programme, task 5 "A modern approach to scientific tasks in an international environment  - opportunities, challenges, threats", 

The Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Lodz University of Technology invites applications for its  free critical thinking workshops, aimed at doctoral candidates studying at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Lodz University of Technology. 

As part of the workshop, participants will develop practical skills in using critical thinking tools in decision-making and setting goals, in particular in scientific work

Key information:
•    one group – up to 22 participants,
•    duration of the workshop: 16 academic hours (45 minutes each) delivered in person, including a coffee break with sweet treats,
•    dates of the workshop – 14–15 April 2026, 
•    workshop language – English,
•    the workshops will be held in person in Lodz; the exact venue will be announced at a later date,
•    after the workshops, each participant will receive a certificate confirming participation,
•    the workshops are conducted in accordance with the principles of equal treatment and accessibility, taking into account the needs of people with disabilities.

The participant of the workshop may be a Doctoral Candidate who:
1.    Is currently enrolled at IDS TUL (i.e. their enrolment at IDS TUL has not been suspended pursuant to Article 204 (3) of the Act and §10 of the IDS Regulations at TUL) and as of the day of the workshops, has the status of a doctoral student
2.    Is highly motivated to develop and acquire critical thinking skills.
3.    Undertakes to participate in the workshops on a full-time basis, i.e. 16 academic hours.
4.    Undertakes to supplement the necessary project documentation.

Recruitment will be carried out in accordance with the principles of equal access and non-discrimination. Applications will be accepted via the online form the 1th of April, to the 8th of April, 2026, available at the following link:

If the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

•    Changes to the schedule may occur. All updates will be published on the IDS TUL website on an ongoing basis.
•    If all places are not filled during the first recruitment round, a supplementary recruitment round is planned. If the number of applicants exceeds the limit, a waiting list will be created.
The project is implemented by Lodz University of Technology under an agreement with the National Agency for Academic Exchange and financed by NAWA.
